What is an elder?
PCC is a Presbyterian church. The word “Presbyterian” comes from the New Testament Greek word presbuteros, meaning “elder.” Elders are ordained servant leaders responsible for leading and shepherding God’s people. The biblical description of elders is found primarily in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, as well as 1 Peter 5 and Acts 20.
Our elder board, or “Session,” is charged with the executive oversight of the church, approving our annual ministry plan and ensuring its execution by staff and volunteers. The elders are also charged with the nurture and care of our congregation. Elders work closely with each of our ministries, our staff, the diaconate, and our community group leaders and coaches to know, feed, lead, and protect the people of PCC.
What is a deacon?
The office of deacon is established in the Bible, primarily in Acts 6:1-7 and 1 Timothy 3:8-13. At PCC, deacons are committed to serve the spiritual and practical needs of the church in an active and visible way. Before taking vows of service to the church, they undergo a period of prayer, contemplation, and training.
Deacons share a common commitment to serve the congregation through Sunday service roles, prayer leadership, staff-led ministries (like Community Groups, Hope for LA, Kids and Students), or deacon-led ministries (Mercy, Care, and Finance).
