What is a Discipleship Group?

Discipleship groups are single-gender groups of 3 or 4 people who are committed to one another for a season of growth. There will be a group leader who will initiate and facilitate. And although the groups will gather around a curriculum (Books One and Two of the FOUNDATIONS Series), the duration of these groups is not pre-defined. Once a group has completed the curriculum, it may continue to meet informally for prayer and accountability, but all members are encouraged to reproduce the group with others. While some groups may resemble peer-peer groups with the aim of cultivating spiritual friendships, we hope that in subsequent generations they may resemble more traditional discipleship or mentorship relationships, as new disciples are led in the application of gospel truths.
What about Community Groups?
In a church of our size, they are absolutely critical for people to connect with one another – to know and to be known. These groups serve as primary points of contact for people to engage in a fellowship of caring. So why discipleship groups? Because the safety of a small, committed group allows for greater degrees of honesty, intimacy, accountability and spiritual engagement. It is unrealistic to expect larger, more transient groups with varying levels of commitment, to consistently and produce deep, intentional spiritual friendships. Our hope is that discipleship groups will naturally emerge from the connections formed in the community groups.
